Physical Education

Program

The Del Mar PE program uses research based content with high level instruction to provide hands-on activities that are developmentally appropriate to support student learning and guide students. Students work to show that they have the skills to move and play. Additionally, students know how to play and use a plan when they play games, they show they know how to get fit and stay fit, behave fairly and respectfully when they play, and know why it’s important to be physically active. Students engage in various methods of assessment including performance assessments, self assessments, peer assessments, quizzes, and projects.

Students experience four main components of physical fitness which are: cardio endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility. In order to be active, students must use warm-ups to prepare the body. Dynamic warm-ups are and static stretches are used for cool downs.

Grade level ‘themes’ include:

  • 6th: sportsmanship, being prepared each day, contribute to a positive, productive, and safe environment, attitudes about health/fitness, how PE improves my life
  • 7th: sportsmanship, cooperation, stress reduction, balanced healthy lifestyle, life-long wellness
  • 8th: sportsmanship, exercise for healthy body and mind now and beyond Reed Union, importance of core strength and flexibility
