Special Education
The Reed Union School District operates three schools: Reed (Grades Pre-K-2), Bel Aire (Grades 3-5) and Del Mar (Grades 6-8). Students are served by full-time and part-time, certificated and classified staff. Each school has a Resource Specialist program to serve the needs of students with Individual Education Plans (IEP). Reed and Bel Aire Schools have a Reading Specialist to provide intervention strategies. The District has a speech therapist that provides speech/language services at all three school sites as well as counseling support provided by our school psychologists. In addition, the district contracts with other service providers as needed, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, vision specialist, hearing impairment specialist, adaptive PE.
Learning Resource Specialist Program
This program is designed to provide supplemental individualized instruction to students in a small group setting. Students who have Individualized Education Plans (IEP) are eligible for enrollment in the Strategies elective class. The class focuses on developing an understanding of the students’ specific learning style and work on individual goals that address needs and prepare students for being successful in all of their classes at middle school (executive functioning, self-advocacy, study skills, academic development skills related to identified goals), which in turn prepares them to be independent learners in high school.
Designated Instructional Services
Designated Instructional Services (DIS) are supplementary services provided to students, which are related to their identified disabilities; examples are speech and language services, occupational therapy, physical therapy, adaptive PE, counseling and services for the hard of hearing or visually impaired.
School Psychologist
Psychologists are responsible for conducting all assessments of students initially referred to special education and for students’ triennial reviews. Reed’s District School Psychologist provides these assessment services at all three school sites, as well as providing consultation support to staff, and individual counseling based upon each student’s needs.
